Lunch & Learn Workshops: A professional facilitator will deliver one hour of training "Essential Skills of Leadership" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in Room V336, Southlake Campus. "How I Learned to Drive": "How I Learned to Drive," the 1998 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama, will be co-presented by the College of Lake County Theatre Department. The show is a darkly humorous tale that explores the disturbing relationship between a young girl and an older man during a series of driving lessons in the 1960s and '70s. The play contains adult content and is not suitable for children.

The show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a post-show discussion in the Studio Theatre. Tickets are $10 each for the general public and $8 for CLC students/staff, seniors 65 and over and JLC season subscribers. Tickets are available at the CLC Box Office in the James Lumber Center on the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Earth Week: Free Earth Week activities will be offered at the College of Lake County Saturday through April 26. Hands-on activities for adults and children are included in the free events, which are presented by CLC instructors and other experts.

• CLC Campus Clean-Up: 10 a.m. Saturday. The CLC Environmental Club will join forces with other clubs to host the second CLC Campus Clean-Up. Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed toe shoes, bring work gloves and meet at the C-Wing entrance.

• Prairie Talk and Walk: at noon Monday, Room A124A. A presentation of the plants of the tall grass prairie followed by a walk through CLC's own prairie restoration site.

• Exploring the Appalachian Trail: 3 p.m. Monday, Room A248. Bob Remedi and Shane Jones, biology instructors will share some of the discoveries they made leading field study classes along stretches of the Appalachian Trail.

• Australian Wildlife: 7 p.m. Monday, Room C005. Betsy Meyer, biology instructor, will present pictures and experiences from a recent trip "down under."

• Fair Trade: Support of workers, their families and their communities. Elisabeth Martin, biology instructor, will give an overview of Fair Trade and discuss the impact it has on workers, their families and communities. Noon April 22, Room A124A.

• Nuclear Energy Discussion Panel, 7 p.m. April 22, room C005. Learn about the future of nuclear energy and the issues involved.

• What Bird Is That in My Back Yard?: at 3 p.m. April 23, Room A248. Anni Gossmann, math instructor and bird watcher, will demonstrate bird vocalizations and explain how to attract birds and identify various species.

• Snakes Alive!: 7 p.m. April 23, Room C005 (C Wing Auditorium). A kid-friendly, up close and personal introduction to snakes and other reptiles. Includes visits from turtles, king snakes and a 14-foot python.

• Waiting on the World to Change … The Global Climate Crisis: 3 p.m. April 24, Room A248. Chemistry instructor Mary Urban will delve into global warming and present scientific data on climate change and the most recent findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

• Adventures in Kenya: 7 p.m. April 24, Room C005 (C Wing Auditorium). Kelly Cartwright, biology instructor, will discuss her recent wildlife escapades on a research trip focusing on Rhino conservation issues in Africa.

• Dragonflies of Illinois: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27, Room T326. Craig Stettner, biology instructor at Harper College and coordinator of the Dragonfly Monitoring Network, will discuss the life history and identification of the dragonflies and damselflies found in the area.

• Who's Who of Owls and Local Raptors: 2 to 4 p.m. April 25, Room T326. Mark Spreyer, executive director of the Stillman Nature Center and adjunct biology instructor, will reveal the truth about many North American owls and hawks.

• Volunteer Workday at Rollins Savanna: 9 a.m. April 26:. Experience hands-on environmental restoration at Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve. Bring water to drink and work gloves and meet at the Savanna entrance at the corner of Washington and Atkinson streets. Register by April 23 by calling (847) 543-2792.

Soul of the Bayou: Cajun music will come to the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts when two bands from Louisiana, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet and the subdudes combine for "Soul of the Bayou" at 7 p.m. on Sunday in the Mainstage Theatre.

BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet combines Cajun musical traditions with zydeco, New Orleans jazz, Tex-Mex, country and blues. The subdudes are a five-man group that mix jazzy dynamics, R&B swagger, vocal harmonies, rock 'n' roll attitude and folksy social consciousness.

Electrical Engineering: The College of Lake County will begin offering classes in its revised two-year associate's degree program in electrical engineering technology this fall. An information session will be held at 7 p.m. Monday to provide details on career opportunities in electrical engineering and electrical engineering technology as well as the degree programs offered by CLC.

Small Business Workshops: The Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County will provide workshops in April and May. Upcoming workshops include

Dance festival: The College of Lake County Prairie Spirits Dance Troupe will perform at the Chiwaukee Dance Festival at 4:30 p.m. April 27 at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan as part of the "Best of the Midwest Showcase" performance. Nine CLC dancers will dance to two sections of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." The festival is a Dancenter North production and celebrates national dance week.

The Sunday afternoon showcase features the best college and amateur dance companies from the Midwest.

Spring Choirs Concert: The College of Lake County's three vocal ensembles -- Choir of Lake County, CLC Singers and the Gospel Choir -- will perform at 4 p.m. April 27 in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

The program will include madrigals, folk ballads, anthems, pop, spirituals and Broadway show tunes. Some of the compositions to be performed are "Hallelujah Amen" from Handel's "Judas Maccabaeus," "With a Voice of Singing" by Martin Shaw, "Autumn Leaves" by Johnny Mercer and Joe Kosma, "Jeremiah's Fire" by Rollo Dilworth and "Make Our Garden Grow" from "Candide" by Leonard Bernstein and Robert Page.

Horticulture Workshops: Four non-credit workshops will be offered at the CLC Horticulture building on the Grayslake campus:

• Annuals and Perennials for 2008 from 9 to 11 a.m. May 19.

• Shrub Pruning for Homeowners from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4.

• New Home, New Yard from 1 to 3 p.m. June 28.

• Cuidado y Mantenimiento de Plantas Perennes (Perennial Garden Care and Maintenance) taught in Spanish from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 12.

Fear No Art: Nearly 60 College of Lake County students and community members will share their artistic talents in the college's 10 Annual "Fear No Art," to be presented May 2 to 4.

Audiences will be treated to guitar-playing singer-songwriters, urban break dancers, talented vocalists, soulful performance poets, multimedia artwork, modern dancers and more. "Fear No Art" will also feature lobby displays of poetry and artwork, including paintings, photographs, drawings, sculptures and watercolors.

"Fear No Art" will be presented in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. May 2 and 3 and at 2 p.m. May 4. Guest Artist Concert: Three outstanding soloists will be featured at the College of Lake County's 31st Annual Guest Artist Concert at 4 p.m. May 4 at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will feature Dick Oatts on saxophone, Larry McWilliams on trumpet and John Seidel on trombone.

Chinese Language Program: Community members are also welcome to attend CLC's Chinese Language Immersion Program sessions from 9 a.m. to noon May 10 in the lower lobby of the C Wing at the CLC Grayslake campus. Sessions are open to anyone with a desire to learn Chinese, including adults, high school students and CLC students. No proficiency is required to participate.

The Chinese Language Immersion sessions will feature four or five native Chinese speakers who facilitate a series of language-building activities. Refreshments will be provided, and participants may attend any or all sessions, with no commitment to attend future sessions.
