Kudos to Arlington for its ash borer plan

It was only a matter of time before the Emerald Ash Borer arrived in Arlington Heights ("Emerald ash borer turns up in Arlington Heights," Oct. 8).

But like so many pests that have attacked the trees of our urban forest, this one can be managed. It is indeed possible to protect ashes and save high-value specimens from EAB - if treated quickly.

The Village of Arlington Heights deserves praise for its proactive work in trapping the beetle. It also has been forward-thinking by establishing a relatively diverse tree population for our village, which provides natural safeguards against having our urban forest devastated by a single type of pest or disease.

Only a third of Arlington Heights' trees are ashes. But American elms in the village are also succumbing to Dutch elm disease.

Given the village's strategic approach to managing our public trees, I have every confidence our tree-lined streets are in good hands as we navigate through EAB infestations and beyond.
