Meet Batavia candidate
Batavia mayoral candidate Alderman Alan Wolff will have his last "meet and greet" from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at Four Beans Coffeehouse, Wilson Street just east of Randall Road. He faces Britta McKenna and Mayor Jeff Schielke in the April 7 election.
Chambers, unions back ECC
Several area chambers of commerce and local unions have announced they are backing Elgin Community College's $178 million bond referendum request. They include the Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce; the Fox Valley Building Trades Council; the Elgin, Hanover Park, Hampshire, South Elgin and Hoffman Estates chambers of commerce; and the Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Authority of Northern Illinois.
Insect seminar
A gardening seminar on "backyard bugs" Saturday will raise money for Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, an animal rescue group based in St. Charles. The 10 a.m. seminar at Wasco Nursery & Garden Center, 41W781 Route 64, will include information about which insects are beneficial to plants and yards, and which can cause harm. Attendees also will learn to identify symptoms of common plant diseases and how to treat them. Admission is a $5 donation. For more information, call (630) 584-4424.
Healthy Hop Saturday
The Kane County Health Department's Healthy Hop 5K Race, 1-mile Fun Run and Tots Hop is Saturday at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. Check-in time is at 7:30 a.m. To register, visit kanehealth.com and follow the Healthy Hop links. The entry fee is $15, except for the Tots Hop, which is free. Runners will compete in 13 age groups. Runners can enter as four-member teams, with the winners based on the fastest combined times.
Flapjacks with firefighters
The North Aurora Fire Protection District is having a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at Station 1, 2 N. Monroe St. The funds generated will be used to purchase materials and educate the community about fire safety. The cost is $15 per family, $5 for individuals, and $3 for senior citizens and children between the ages of 3 and 12. Children under the age of 3 are free.
