Former Loyola basketball player Ed Earle dies

Former Loyola University men's basketball star Ed Earle passed away March 26.

Earle, a graduate of Schurz High School in Chicago, was a member of the Ramblers' program from 1946-50 and currently ranks 36th on the school's career scoring chart with 1,018 points.

Earle, who appeared in 119 games in his career, averaged 10.0 points per game in 1949-50 as a senior. In 1948-49, he contributed 9.4 ppg and helped Ramblers to a 25-6 overall record and a runner-up finish at the National Invitation Tournament. During that season, Loyola knocked off then No. 1 ranked Kentucky, 67-56 in the second round of the NIT, before dispatching No. 7 Bradley, 55-50.

In his four seasons at Loyola, Earle helped the Ramblers to an 88-37 (.704) record and three 20-win seasons. He was a teammate of All-Americans Jack Kerris and Nick Kladis and was named to the Loyola 1950s All-Decade Team in 2006.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 3-9 p.m., at Ryan-Parke Funeral Home, 120 S. Northwest Highway in Park Ridge. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, April 4 at 10 a.m., at St. Juliana Church, 7201 N. Oketo (at Touhy) in Chicago.
