Skokie officer injured in shootout with bank robbery suspect
A Skokie police officer involved in a shootout with an alleged bank robber has been treated and released from an Evanston Hospital.
The alleged bank robber, however, was killed after he allegedly opened fire on the unnamed Skokie police officer Monday afternoon in Lincolnwood following a short high-speed chase, police said.
Police say the officer pulled over the vehicle suspected to be involved in a robbery of the Fifth Third Bank at 240 Skokie Blvd. in Northbrook when the alleged robber opened fire on the police officer.
The bandit allegedly held up the bank just before 5 p.m. Monday, then drove away. But the officer spotted the car on the Edens Expressway and chased him down. There was a high-speed chase before the man stopped his white Pontiac on Estes Avenue in Lincolnwood, got out of the car and opened fire on the officer, officials said.
The officer returned fire, killing Rodney Moore, 34, of Merrillville Ind., police said.
Police said the officer's bulletproof vest stopped a bullet that could have potentially killed the officer.
