Linebrink lands on DL
DETROIT - The good news is medical tests on Saturday revealed White Sox relief pitcher Scott Linebrink doesn't have rotator cuff or labrum damage in his right shoulder.
But the Sox will still be without their workhorse setup man after Linebrink was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 23) with inflammation of the posterior of his right shoulder.
Ehren Wasserman was recalled from Class AAA Charlotte to fill Linebrink's spot in the bullpen.
"As far as the news we got today, it's probably a pretty good scenario," Linebrink said. "It's not rotator cuff, it's not a labrum, it's something in the back, almost back more than shoulder. It's something that is definitely treatable. We know what we're up against. We're going to work hard the next few weeks and get right."
Linebrink, 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA and fourth in the American League with 19 holds, has pitched only once since July 9.
The right-hander said the discomfort started after he worked back-to-back innings against Oakland in early July while throwing a combined 43 pitches.
"The doctor told me that was consistent with this kind of spot," Linebrink said. "A heavy workload in a short amount of time. The Chicago doctor said this usually happens in spring training to a lot of guys when you're kind of getting back into it and putting your shoulder through a lot. That's what it was. That's how quickly it can happen."
No deal: Several trades have been made around baseball heading up to Thursday's nonwaiver deadline. but White Sox general manager Kenny Williams again sounded like no moves are close.
"The climate is awful," Williams said. "But that's from our perspective. I'm really not seeing anything that makes any sense. As a matter of fact, the things that are in front of us right now would do nothing but harm us for the present and the future."
