Prosecutors won't seek death penalty in Elk Grove murder case
Prosecutors announced Monday they will not seek the death penalty for Jonathan Wood, charged with murdering his mother at her Elk Grove Village home.
The 40-year-old Wood faces charges of first-degree murder, concealment of a homicide, unlawful restraint and aggravated fleeing among other charges in the October, 2008 death of his mother at her home in the 1500 block of White Trail. Wood had lived with his mother, Marilyn Wood, until a month before her death, when she took out an order of protection against him. Jonathan Wood has convictions for resisting arrest, reckless driving, disorderly conduct and public indecency dating back to 2002.
Assistant State's Attorney Steve Rosenblum indicated that prosecutors intend to turn over "hundreds and hundreds" of pages of discovery, including medical records from several hospitals, to defense attorney Jim Mullenix. However, it could be several months before the discovery is complete, said Rosenblum, citing additional items requiring testing by the Illinois State Police crime lab.
If convicted, Wood could face 20 to 60 years in prison or life without parole. He next appears in court June 3.
