Woman burned in Arlington Heights condo fire

A woman sustained moderate burns that required a trip to the hospital after her second-floor condominium caught fire early Friday evening in Arlington Heights.

Battalion Cmdr. Tom Zerfass said the fire alarm sounded about 5:30 p.m. Firefighters could see flames jutting from a second-story window when they arrived at the scene of a two-story condominium complex near the intersection of Lincoln Lane and Miner Street.

The complex is the residence of quite a few senior citizens, Zerfass said. By the time firefighters got inside the building, a neighbor of the woman had entered her condominium and pulled her to safety. Zerfass said he believes the woman is not typically very mobile.

The fire was contained within one room, with the sofa appearing to sustain the most damage. There is no sprinkler system in the building, but firefighters had the scene completely secured by about 7:15 p.m. A couple of other units on the second floor sustained some smoke damage. Those residents will be temporarily relocated, Zerfass said. The condominium where the fire began is not livable after the damage it sustained.

Zerfass said the burned woman was transported to Northwest Community Hospital. There was no information available on her condition Friday evening.

Zerfass said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
