Focus on similarities brings us together

During the past few weeks, I have received e-mails and comments from area residents stating that they had read my letter to the editor in the Oct. 10 edition of the Daily Herald. My identity has been mistaken for that of another Pat Harrington.

The content of the published letter spoke about the differences in our society and how to address issues. The letter ended by suggesting "we have a thoughtful, ethical, sane, nonpartisan discussion about how to fix things properly." My view comes not in the differences in which I view life and people, but our sameness.

It is my good fortune to work with a committed group of professionals, faith communities, community groups and area companies who choose to concentrate on the positives and the contribution we can each make to improve the lives of each fellow man, woman and child. Our efforts are shared with over 3,000 dedicated and selfless northwest suburban residents who give of their time, their experience, and their finances to make this world a better place for all.

They were there during the harsh months of last winter to provide warm shelter and food to our area residents, who once were like us, a paycheck away from being homeless.

We cannot afford to wait for the wheels of change to be set into motion; human beings are suffering each and every day. In short... we are too busy making a difference everyday to concern ourselves with that which separates us.
