Controlled burns to be held in Lake Zurich

The Village of Lake Zurich is responsible for managing the wetlands in many of the Natural Resource Areas located within the Village boundaries. Prescribed burns are an important tool for the successful maintenance of the wetlands. The burn is designed to simulate pre-settlement conditions, when fire caused from lightening strikes annually burned native landscapes throughout Illinois. Ecologically, fire inhibits the growth of low quality, invasive weeds while it stimulates the growth and production of high quality native plants. While the blackened earth may appear unsightly for a few weeks following the burn, the site will green up quickly.

The village is conducting controlled burns as part of the wetland management for the following Subdivisions the week of March 16: Braemar Subdivision, Chestnut Corners Unit 2, East Harbor, Heatherleigh Subdivision, John Court, Lot 42 (Behind Partridge Lane), Old Mill Grove, Westberry Subdivision, Willow Ponds Subdivision.

The work will be done by McGinty Brothers Inc. of Long Grove, (847) 438-5161. For information, call the Engineering Division at (847) 540-1694; Lake Zurich Police nonemergency, at (847) 438-2349; or Lake Zurich Fire Prevention Bureau, at (847) 540-5073.
