Barrington asst. fire chief retires after 37 years

Retirements typically become effective at 5 o'clock on Friday afternoons, but firefighter-paramedic isn't the most typical of careers.

For Barrington Assistant Fire Chief Lenn Grant, the end of his last shift after 37 years with the department came at 8:15 a.m. Monday.

The event was marked by more than just the usual shift change at Barrington's Public Safety Building on Northwest Highway.

A small ceremony was held outside the building to honor Grant for his decades of service. The formal occasion was then followed by a celebratory reception inside.
