Mundelein may clarify parking rules

You may need to grab a ruler if you want to park on a Mundelein street following a snowfall next winter.

The village board is considering changing its parking regulations to specify when cars can't park on a public roadway during the winter months.

At its meeting Monday night, the board debated a parking that would go into effect after a snowfall of two inches or more.

The current rule simply says street parking isn't allowed during snow-removal operations, which is too vague for Mayor Kenneth H. Kessler, who lobbied for new rules.

"Does that mean after the first snowflake falls, or after so many inches?" Kessler said. "This way, it's very defined."

Violations would result in $25 fines. Illegally parked cars also could be towed to other parts of the village.

The village board opted to postpone voting on the proposal, however, because several trustees had concerns about the plan.

Trustees Robin Meier and Ed Sullivan didn't think the rules are specific enough.

For example, the proposal doesn't indicate where the two-inch snowfall should be measured, Meier said.

Sullivan added compliance would be difficult because the plan didn't specifically indicate when snow removal ends.

Kessler was irked by the trustees' questions, criticizing them for not raising concerns sooner. Even so, he agreed to remove the plan from the agenda for further work.
