Chicago Lyric Opera co-founder dies in Italy
ROME -- The co-founder of the Lyric Opera of Chicago has died at a hospital in Italy at the age of 92.
Doctors say Nicola Rescigno died yesterday of complications following heart failure and breathing problems. He'd been admitted on July 30th with a broken leg, following a fall.
Rescigno conducted Maria Callas' debut in America, eventually becoming one of the star soprano's favorite conductors throughout a cooperation that spanned years.
In addition to co-founding the Lyric Opera,
Rescigno also conducted at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera and Vienna State Opera. His recordings include recitals with Callas and Luciano Pavarotti.
