Mother accused of trying to drown baby in toilet

COLUMBIA -- A Belleville woman is jailed on $250,000 after being accused of trying to drown her baby in a toilet last November.

Twenty-three-year-old Elyse Mamino is charged in Monroe County with attempted first-degree murder.

Police arrested Mamino on Friday at her home.

The criminal complaint alleges that Mamino placed the newborn face down in a water-filled toilet bowl while the infant was gasping for air and kicking her legs.

Authorities say additional details about the case, including the baby's whereabouts, might be released during a news conference scheduled for Monday afternoon.
