Think that was a storm? Wait until Tuesday night

As the Monday morning snow begins to lighten, officials are warning that more is on the way.

Between 1 and 2 inches of snow hit the ground overnight, causing a slower than normal commute for many motorists Monday morning.

One of the worst hit areas was Interstate 80, just east of the Des Plaines River bridge near Joliet, where a multi-vehicle accident blocked westbound lanes. However, spinouts due to wet and snowy conditions also were on the Reagan Tollway, the Edens Expressway and the Tri-State Tollway throughout the morning.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service said between 1 and 2 inches of snow fell over the Chicago area. O'Hare and Chicago recorded the highest snowfall total at 1.9 inches, while Batavia, Elburn and other western DuPage and Kane county areas recorded about 1 inch.

Any accumulation is expected to melt, however, as temperatures pass the freezing point and creep into the mid-30s during the day.

But, a second storm currently over the Rocky Mountains in Colorado is expected to bring a real punch to the area. A winter storm watch was put into effect for Kane, Lake and McHenry counties so far, but other areas are expected to be included in the storm watch before the end of Monday.

Though meteorologists warn the storm system hasn't fully developed yet, that system could dump between 6 inches and 10 inches to northern Illinois.
