Mom wants new judge in attempted murder trial

WATERLOO, Ill. -- A southern Illinois woman charged with trying to drown her newborn in a toilet wants a new judge.

John O'Gara, the attorney for 23-year-old Elyse Mamino, filed paperwork in Monroe County Thursday claiming Circuit Judge Dennis Doyle is too prejudiced against Mamino to give her a fair trial.

Authorities say that in November, the Belleville woman delivered a baby girl in the bathroom of a Columbia home during a family party then tried to drown her.

The baby is in foster care. Her father, Edward Goodrich, is seeking custody.

Mamino has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges.

After Mamino's arrest, authorities found the remains of an infant in her home. No charges have been filed in that case.
