Opponent wrong on vets voting record

Recently my opponent sent a number of misleading mailers to voters personally attacking me and accusing me of voting against veterans programs. The fact is, his accusations are a shameful distortion of the truth.

The truth is, I did support legislation that funded the state's veterans homes, services for homeless veterans, grants for reducing veterans' health insurance costs, research into post-traumatic stress disorder, and expanded veteran outreach programs.

The truth is, since Gov. Blagojevich took office, more than $6 million have been raided from funds dedicated to veterans services. This is where the real damage to the funding occurred, and I voted against every one of these fund sweeps at a time when there were more than 800 veterans on waiting lists to receive care at our veterans homes. I co-sponsored legislation that prohibits the governor from raiding dedicated veterans funds, and I fought to end the practice of balancing the budget on the backs of our veterans.

The truth is, I voted to provide our heroes with property tax relief through the Returning Veterans' Homestead Exemption.

The facts are clear: My opponent distorted the truth and is using the veterans of this state as a vehicle to advance his political aspirations.

I have kept my promise to veterans to secure their future and honor their sacrifice.
