Calm operator got them through it

On Aug. 3, 2009 about 9:30 a.m. I was alone in our office at D&S Appliance Repair with my son, Steve, when I heard a loud crash. I turned and saw my 50-year-old son flat on the floor. I rushed to him and realized something was wrong. In a panic I grabbed the phone and called 911.

In a calming voice the operator asked several questions, had me check several things, then firmly said we are going to put my hands together on his chest and push to the count of two every second and said she would count with me.

I never thought at the time I was doing CPR and it was keeping him alive. My son was transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center, placed in an ice jacket and has just received a full recovery report from the doctor.

This is a long overdue thank you to the 911 operator.
