Make some memories at Sleepy Hollow picnic
On Saturday, Sept. 20, the village of Sleepy Hollow will hold a picnic as part of the village's 50th anniversary celebration.
"We're celebrating our 50th anniversary 'Ravinia-style,'" said Joy Wind, who is on the anniversary committee.
The picnic grounds at Sabatino Park open at noon. Bring your own picnic (grill available), blanket, lawn chairs and your favorite lawn games.
"We'll supply the fun," Wind said. "We will also be collecting items that will be included in a time capsule to be opened 50 years from now. There will also be a dedication of our village hall which will now be known as the Floyd Falese Municipal Center, named in honor of the village's founder."
Beginning at noon there will be a car and cycle show. Are you proud of your car or motorcycle? Bring it down. There are no restrictions on age or type of vehicle. I know that I love our Chrysler van with its big windows and room for multiple grandchildren more than anyone could love a Corvette, Mustang or Jaguar.
If you've always dreamed of being a NASCAR star or racing down at Daytona or the Indy 500, you can take part in the lawn tractor race. Registration is from noon until 1:30 p.m. Races start at 2 p.m. and contestants must be 14 or older.
If you think that you should be the next "American Idol" or if you know someone with musical talent, here's a chance to share it with a crowd. Open microphone opportunities will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Some local bands have already signed up, and beginning at 3:30 p.m. there will be a "Fabulous '50s" disc jockey on hand to remind us about what was going on in the musical world when the village of Sleepy Hollow was born.
If you are a budding entrepreneur and are looking to start acquiring your first million, there will be a Village Marketplace. There will be no fee to set up a booth and sell your wares whether it is crafts you have made, books you have written, products that you represent or services that you offer. You will be responsible for setting up and manning your own booths throughout the afternoon.
If you just want to relax and have a great time there will be pickup games of volleyball, tug-of-war, bean bag toss, bocce ball and more. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be sold; however, alcoholic beverages can't be brought to the park.
At 6:30 p.m. you can just sit back, relax and watch a video review of 50th anniversary events followed by a showing of the final Hollywood in the Hollow movie, "Ratatouille."
