"Valentino: The Last Emperor"
Vanity Fair editor and writer Matt Tyrnauer and cinematographer Tom Hurwitz have put together a terrific documentary on the life of fashion designer Valentino Garavani. The film was shot over a two-year period, and lets us into a world that very few of us know.
Valentino has been at top of his game for 45 years, and has earned millions. We get to see his yacht, private jet, many homes, his six pugs and his partner of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti.
The designer lives and rules like an emperor and demands much of his employees. The filmmakers offer a warts-and-all portrait of a man whose dresses were worn by the rich and famous, and whose life was as fabulous as his gowns.
Celebrating Valentino's 45th anniversary in the business, his partner decided to throw a three-day career retrospective in Rome, that ended with a huge party at the Temple of Venus in the Roman Forum.
The film has premiered at a variety of festivals.
"Groucho Marx: You Bet Your Life"
Groucho's famous television show started out on radio in 1947 and moved to TV in 1950. Groucho hosted the show, with help from announcer George Fenneman. The show centered on Groucho bantering with the contestants before asking them questions, where they could win money.
Also, the audience knew the secret word, in which the contestant could win additional money.
The show paired unusual couples, along with celebrities. It relied on Groucho's humor and was a hit. There is a new two-disc set that includes 30 episodes of the classic show.
There is a new series of films that have been put together in various themes. Each two-disc set includes six films and retails for $6.98.
