Richwoods routs Freeport in Class 3A title game
NORMAL - Peoria Richwoods set a record for largest championship game victory margin as it routed Freeport 56-19 in Saturday's IHSA Class 3A girls state basketball title game at Redbird Arena.
The Lady Knights (34-3) used a barrage of early 3-pointers to take command and held Freeport scoreless for more than seven minutes in a stretch that began late in the first half.
Richwoods forward Katie Murphy scored 17 points while guard Shyla Nott added 15 - including three first half 3-pointers. Forward Courtney Shiffer led the Pretzels (31-4) with 12 points.
The Lady Knights' 37-point difference topped the previous mark set in 1996 when Carlyle routed Carthage 86-50 in a Class A title game.
The championship was Richwoods' third while Freeport finished second in Class 3A for the second straight season.
Chicago Marshall defeated Springfield 56-43 in the third place game.
