South Side Irish parade scrapped for 2010
The South Side Irish Parade will not be held next year, according to the planning committee.
"This decision was not arrived at lightly," according to a statement released by the South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee.
The parade began 31 years ago in the Beverly/Morgan Park and Mt. Greenwood communities. Since 1979, the numbers of parade goers has grown to 300,000.
"The sheer volume has become more than the neighborhood can reasonably accommodate," said the release.
The parade committee said it plans to work events that are a neighborhood-friendly celebration of Irish heritage to continue the tradition.
