Boilers' breakdown has Gustafson students on the move

Classes will resume Tuesday for Alice Gustafson Elementary School students in Batavia, after boiler breakdowns forced it to cancel classes Monday.

However, students won't actually attend classes at Gustafson.

Students are to show up at 9 a.m. at the school at 905 Carlisle Road to collect their supplies from their classrooms. They will then be bused to other schools throughout the district, and have class there for the next two days while temporary boilers are installed, said Superintendent Jack Barshinger.

The school has had problems with its boilers, which supply hot-water heat, a lot this winter, he said. The main boiler broke two weeks ago, and the district has been unable to find spare parts or an entity to manufacture the parts needed to fix it.

Monday morning, the backup boiler cracked and failed.

"There's no use spending any more of taxpayers' dollars in fixing them," Barshinger said.

More than 400 students attend Gustafson.
