Carol Stream drug arrest may be linked to death

A Carol Stream man who is accused of possessing crack cocaine may face more serious charges if prosecutors find he played a role in his girlfriend's death.

Prosecutors are awaiting toxicology results before deciding whether to charge Brett M. Johnson with drug-induced homicide - a felony that carries an up to 30-year prison term.

Johnson, 29, was ordered held Thursday in the DuPage County jail on a $200,000 bond. So far, he is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Carol Stream Deputy Police Chief Jerry O'Brien said Johnson called 911 at about 7 a.m. Wednesday to report he found his girlfriend unresponsive after he awoke next to her that morning.

Rescuers rushed to his house on the 900 block of Columbia Court, and transported Jill Przespolewski to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Doctors pronounced the 33-year-old Clarendon Hills woman dead after unsuccessful attempts to revive her.

Police interviewed Johnson and, after obtaining a court-ordered search warrant, recovered plastic bags believed to have contained residue of cocaine and heroin, as well as drug paraphernalia, officials said.

Results on toxicology tests can take six to eight weeks.
