Stomp and chomp your way into fall via Geneva's Festival of the Vine
As the leaves start to change to orange, red and yellow, Geneva will welcome the warmth of autumn with a bit of grape and plenty to taste.
The Chamber of Commerce's annual Festival of the Vine begins Friday at 10 a.m. in the streets of downtown Geneva. In its 27th year, the festival hopes to entice guests with the sights, smells and tastes of this time of year.
"Lots of people think Labor Day marks the end of the summer," said Sandy Portincaso, events coordinator for the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. "With this festival, we're hoping to extend the fun of summer into the fall season."
Festival of the Vine will feature a variety of activities, with something fun for everyone. Most notable is the Flavor Fare, where participants can sample signature dishes from many Geneva restaurants, including Inglenook Pantry, Urban Grille and Aurelio's Pizza. Everything from seafood pasta to swedish meatballs is there for the tasting.
Also under the tent will be a wine tasting featuring 17 wines from around the world. Expert connoisseurs will be there to guide guests to find the perfect taste for their palate.
After savoring the flavors of fall, visitors can stroll through the Harvest Market. The entrance will present all the visual beauty of fall with a gorgeous gourds display created by The Great Pumpkin Patch of Arthur, Ill.
Among the pumpkins will be an extended arts and crafts show including over 75 artists, where shoppers will find an array of handmade gifts, accessories and decorations. The festival also has a full schedule of entertainment and family activities planned. You can kick off your shoes and squish some grapes with your toes for the Great Stomping. Afterward, mark a free T-shirt with your own purple footprints.
Or listen to the live music while the young ones play in the Kids Patch, which will host bouncy inflatables, a candy in the straw search, and John Deere tractor pulls.
If your feet get tired from all the stomping and shopping, complimentary horse-drawn carriage rides through the town will help you take a load off. There is no charge to wander through the streets of the festival. Food, wine and special treasures you may find along the way are the only costs.
"Most every thing we are offering is free, so it's a great place to meet up with friends and find another moment to celebrate," Portincaso said.
