Zambrano to start for Cubs on Opening Day
MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs right-hander Carlos Zambrano will make his fifth straight Opening Day start.
Manager Lou Piniella announced his pick Thursday. Zambrano will take the mound against the Houston Astros on Monday, April 6.
The decision was between Zambrano and right-hander Ryan Dempster, and Piniella says he chose Zambrano after talking it over with pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
Zambrano was 14-6 with a 3.91 ERA in 30 starts last season. Dempster was 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA and made the National League All-Star team.
Piniella says Dempster is disappointed he won't be on the mound on Opening Day but said he's happy doing whatever the Cubs need.
