Des Plaines accident kills Chicago woman
A 51-year-old Chicago woman died after a weekend accident in Des Plaines.
Josefa Salgado was a passenger in a 1997 Ford Escort traveling westbound on Touhy Avenue at 5:15 a.m. Sunday.
The driver of the Ford Escort, Anais Bahena of Chicago, failed to yield while attempting to make a left turn onto southbound Mount Prospect Road, Des Plaines police said.
The vehicle was struck by a 1998 Honda CRV traveling eastbound on Touhy Avenue in the center lane.
Salgado was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, where she died a short time later of multiple injuries, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Bahena, 51, has been charged with failure to yield and will appear in Cook County traffic court at 9 a.m. April 2 in Skokie.
"There was no alcohol involved," Des Plaines Police Chief Jim Prandini said. "It didn't appear that the victim was injured seriously when the officers went out there. She was complaining of pain, but it wasn't like she was unconscious."
The driver of the second vehicle, Patricia Lindquist of Homer Glen, was treated and released at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago.
Prandini said police are considering placing an automated red-light enforcement camera at the intersection where the accident occurred.
"That's our highest traffic accident intersection in town that's controlled by traffic signals," he said. "That's number one on our list for the vendor to do their study."
