Recent Glenbard North graduates among victims of mass shooting downstate
Glenbard High School District 87 officials said Sunday that two recent graduates were among those shot in an early morning mass shooting in downstate Bloomington.
One of the eight victims, a 19-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. She and the other former student, also a 19-year-old woman, were 2026 graduates of Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream, according to a school official.
The Daily Herald is not naming the victims because they have not been publicly identified by authorities in Bloomington.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic shooting in Bloomington this weekend and the impact it has had on members of our community,” District 87 Superintendent Jessica Santee said a statement. “Our connection to students doesn’t end when they graduate, they will always remain part of our school community.”
Santee said Glenbard North leadership has been in communication with families, students and staff working to provide any assistance needed.
“Far too many young lives have been impacted by senseless shootings,” she added. “It is heartbreaking that our communities continue to face tragedies like this.”
According to Bloomington police, officers responded at 1:23 a.m. Sunday to a report of multiple shots fired in the 100 block of East Division Street, near the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University.
Officers arrived to find eight shooting victims. Besides the woman pronounced dead, one victim was taken to a regional trauma center in critical condition and six others suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.
Police had no suspects in custody as of Sunday, but described the shooting as an isolated event and said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
