Why e-bikes are causing Buffalo Grove Park District to scrap project
Buffalo Grove Park District leaders discussed plans Wednesday for several upcoming facility upgrades, and one project they’re dropping because of e-bikes.
That project involved color-coating the basketball court at Apple Hill Park on the village’s north side.
“Because we’ve been noticing an uptick in e-bike damage, we have decided to remove it from this project, so it will just be a black asphalt top,” said Laurie Hoffman, the park district’s planning and development manager.
Hoffman shared those and other plans with residents during a community meeting Wednesday at the Lazy Dog restaurant in Buffalo Grove.
Other planned work includes the addition of the park district’s first futsal court at Longfellow Park. Futsal is a five-on-five version of soccer.
Veterans Park will see two tennis courts fully rebuilt and its basketball courts replaced. The district has secured a state grant and expects a U.S. Tennis Association grant to help pay for the work.
Windsor Ridge Park also will receive a new basketball court, and its baseball field will be removed, leaving room for soccer, lacrosse, and flag football.
The district’s Alcott Center will undergo renovations, including the relocation of water pipes to allow for easier maintenance, and Willow Stream Pool will get new pumps and a new liner for the main pool and a new boiler.
Residents who attended asked questions and offered suggestions.
Cary Claver, who lives near Apple Hill Park, suggested turning an empty field behind the park into a natural meadow with wildflowers, pollinator plants and walking paths.
