Boys soccer roundup: Teran, Addison Trail shut out Glenbard East; Naperville North advances

Addison Trail beat Glenbard East 3-0 to win the Class 3A Glenbard East regional final.

Filip Makarczuk rebounded a shot from Alexander Berrum that was rejected by the Glenbard East goalkeeper in the third minute and sent it in for a 1-0 lead.

That proved to be all the offense the Blazers needed. They got their first insurance goal in the 47th minute on a shot from Berrum that clanked off the post and was retrieved by Alejandro Tinajero, who sent in another rebound. A penalty kick from Enrique Merino in the 60th minute finished the scoring.

Goalie Omar Teran and the defense posted their ninth shutout of the season while earning the program’s fourth regional title in the past 10 years.

The Blazers’ next task will be to beat Elk Grove, which earned one of the biggest upsets on the day, knocking off Maine West 3-2 in double overtime. The Blazers resume play in the state tournament on Tuesday in the West Chicago sectional semifinals.

Naperville North (12-3-5) rallied to stun Naperville Central during a penalty-kick shootout at the Class 3A Naperville North regional final.

Dylan Healy collected a loose ball and unloaded a strike from at least 40 yards to tie the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute.

After both teams scored in the overtimes — Redhawks in the first and the Huskies in the second — the game had to be decided in a shootout with the Huskies winning it 3-1after five of the nine attempts were rejected.

The Huskies will get Benet during Tuesday’s East Aurora sectional semifinal.

The Redwings (11-1-4) beat Plainfield North 2-1 to win the Class 3A Oswego regional final, rallying from a 1-0 halftime deficit.

The Redwings scored the equalizer and the go-ahead goal within a minute of each other in the 71st and 72nd minutes. First, Marco DeSimone had a close-range shot after a Declan Crist ball went to the back post. Crist was involved again in the next offensive play, sending a pass to Evan Doy who buried a 10-yard shot to lift the Redwings to victory.

“That was as good of a game as we have had this year,” Benet coach Matt Klosterman said. “Great battle against a good team. Lots of guys came away bloodied and bruised. I’m very proud we never stopped fighting. Plainfield North has a lot of good players. We know lots of players and coaches very well. They are a top group and left it all on the field.”

South Elgin beat Elgin 1-0 to win the Class 3A South Elgin regional final.

“The second regional title in a row,” Storm coach Jerzy Skowron said. “An accomplishment that has escaped our boys program until now. These boys have worked their tails off to get back here, but are still incredibly hungry to advance further than last year’s incredible team (that won a sectional).”

Adam Kiel’s goal off a Momo Gonzalez assist, along with three saves from goalkeeper Danny Moscoso proved to be all that separated South Elgin and Elgin.

“We felt like (Alan Munoz’s) presence was a problem for Elgin so other guys were able to get some freedom to do what we’ve been working on,” Skowron said. “We dominated possession and feel like we left a few goals on the field. But we’re happy to win a regional at home and move onto sectional.”

The Storm (17-3-4) will face St. Charles East (19-4) on Tuesday during a Class 3A Huntley sectional semifinal. The Saints defeated Rockford Jefferson 2-0 in Friday’s Class 3A Harlem regional final behind goals from Brendan Szerlong and Sam Arville.

Huntley (16-2-2) will take on St. Charles North (13-4-2) in the second semifinal. The Red Raiders beat Hampshire 1-0 at Jacobs and the North Stars beat Auburn 4-0 at home on Friday.

Waubonsie Valley (8-7-8) fell short in its bid to win the program’s first regional title in 10 years, dropping a 1-0 decision to Oswego East in Class 3A Downers Grove South regional final.

In Class 2A, Marmion (14-5-3) rolled past Batavia 5-1 to win the Marmion regional title. Geneva (18-2-2) survived Harvard 2-1 to win the Belvedere regional.

“Hard to play away from home on a narrow field with patchy grass,” Vikings coach Blake Hughes said. “Good teams find a way to get it done and in this tournament it’s not always pretty. Such was the case for us today. From the outset we took the pressure to Harvard, hitting the crossbar and eventually converting before half.”

Gabe Barwiolek scored and had an assist to lead the Vikings. Owen Ris also scored and Alex Juhazy had an assist.

“The second half saw us come out in the same way, scoring early this time,” Hughes said. “We then faced adversity and endured a strong Harvard push which included a messy concession. We had more opportunities than the final score indicated, but like I said, nothing is given or really normal in this tournament.”

The Vikings will face Crystal Lake South at Rockford Boylan at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a sectional semifinal.

Hinsdale South (12-9-1) beat Oak Forest 2-0 to win its regional final at home in Darien.

Wheaton Academy (13-6-3) could not do the same, dropping a 4-2 game at home in West Chicago to Boylan. Crystal Lake South will travel to Boylan for a sectional semifinal against the hosts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Hornets resume on Monday at Chicago University where they will play the winner of the Lemont regional.

Finally, Universal beat Lisle 4-3 to win the Class 1A Lisle regional final. Senior Gabe Grant scored twice to push his total to 34 on the year and Alex Bakowicz also scored, but it wasn’t enough for the Lions to keep their season alive.

“It was a tough day,” Lisle coach Jamie Clemmons said. “Too many missed opportunities today and a tough break with PKs at the end of the game. Good season overall. (We’re) 10-5-2 and Illinois Central Eight champions.”
