Funeral set for Mundelein shooting victim Nicole Heiser

Funeral activities will be held next week for one of the four victims in last weekend’s mass shooting in Mundelein.

Visitation for Nicole A. Heiser will run from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 N. Cemetery Road, Gurnee. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6401 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee.

Heiser, 37, of Antioch, was fatally shot Sunday by her boyfriend, 51-year-old Bryan Schmidt, inside his parents’ home on Wellington Avenue, Mundelein police have said.

He also murdered his parents, 80-year-old James Schmidt and 77-year-old Rebecca Schmidt; and his 22-year-old son, Maclaine, of Lake Bluff, before killing himself.

The five bodies were discovered late Sunday night by officers after another member of the Schmidt family couldn’t reach her relatives and requested a well-being check at the house.

Two handguns police believe were used in the attacks and suicide notes were found.

The killings — and the killer’s possible motive — remained under investigation Friday.

“The department and our detectives are committed to conducting a thorough and complete investigation,” Chief Tom Poynor said in an email. “This includes conducting interviews and reviewing a significant amount of evidence, including electronic devices that will be forensically analyzed.”

Heiser was a veterinary assistant at GreenTree Animal Hospital in Libertyville. She formerly worked at the Northern Illinois Cat Clinic in Libertyville — a facility owned and operated by the Schmidt family until it closed a year or two ago.

Heiser’s survivors include her mother, Joanne, and a sister, Jennifer.

Instead of flowers, donations can be made to Second City Canine Rescue at sccrescue.org/donate/.

As of Friday, more than $25,000 had been raised through an online effort to cover Heiser’s funeral expenses.

Arrangements for the Schmidts’ funerals are pending.
