Midway runway closure could lead to flight delays, cancellations

Travelers can expect some delays and cancellations after the closure of a key Midway International Airport runway through mid-November for repairs.

The unusual measure was necessary to fix damage to a safety system on Runway 22-Left, the Chicago Department of Aviation announced late Monday.

Recent aircraft activity, including jet blasts or rapid exhaust from plane engines, had deteriorated Runway’s Engineered Materials Arresting System, located at the departure end.

“Safety is the top priority at Chicago’s airports, and we are working to complete these repairs safely and promptly,” CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray said in a statement.

“We’re coordinating closely with our partners at the FAA and the airlines to reduce disruptions for travelers and return the airfield to normal operating conditions as quickly and safely as possible.”

The CDA said some disruptions will occur but they will vary based on airlines schedules and weather, “particularly wind direction, which affects how the airport’s four-runway network can be used for arrivals and departures,” officials said.

Passengers should keep an eye on their flight status and check with airlines before heading to Midway, the CDA advised. “Passengers whose flights are affected should work directly with their air carrier on rebooking or other itinerary changes.”

The city is working closely with the FAA and carriers to minimize interruptions to service and will keep the public updated on repairs, officials added.
