Alley Art Fest hosts free screening of horror classic ‘Carrie’ at The Venue

On Sunday, Oct. 25, The Venue in Aurora will present a free “Scary Movie Night” with a screening of “Carrie” in advance of Halloween. Registration is encouraged.

Directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie and John Travolta, the R-rated film is based on Stephen King’s first published novel. The movie was released in fall 1976, becoming a bicentennial box office success. Doors open at 6 p.m. The movie starts at 7 p.m.

The free movie night is hosted by Alley Art Festival, a collective that supports the arts from Aurora to Elgin. Attendees are invited to come in costume, and there will be Halloween candy for attendees. Partnering for the event, the Aurora Film Society will have freshly popped popcorn available.

“With our country’s 250th anniversary, it is fitting that we honor a pivotal horror film that came out during the bicentennial celebrations,” said Marissa Amoni, who runs the Alley Art Festival collective.

Called a “cinematic virtuoso,” De Palma, 86, is “a living legend who has built an incredible film canon,” Amoni said of the notable director. Past Scary Movie Nights have featured “Night of the Living Dead” and Hitchcock’s “The Birds.”

The Venue is a live music performance room located at 21 S. Broadway in downtown Aurora. The bar will be open and offers a wide selection of craft beer and other beverages. To register for the free movie, visit themusicvenue.org.
