Batavia celebrates Piron Day with exciting win over Wheaton Warrenville South

When the mayor names a day after you, you better win the football game.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke named Friday Dennis Piron Day for the retiring coach, who was hosting DuKane Conference foe Wheaton Warrenville South in Piron's final regular-season game.

As it always does WW South made it tough, but Batavia (7-2, 6-1) won the game 27-24 in Bulldog Stadium.

Pushed within 20-17 on a 33-yard field goal by WW South's Drew Maletich with 7:42 left to play, the Bulldogs got the score they needed on Michael Vander Luitgaren's 24-yard touchdown pass to Brennon Zeng with 2:48 to play.

WW South (6-3, 5-2) scored a touchdown on Jacob Bellows' 20-yard catch from A.J. Rogers, and after forcing a Batavia punt gave it a shot with a pair of hook-and-laterals before time ran out on the Tigers.
