Consider the timing for library’s proposed expansion

I strongly support the Vernon Area Public Library and recognize the value it provides to our community, our families and our property values. My concern is not with the library itself, but with the timing and cost of the proposed expansion.

The Vernon Area Public Library District is asking voters in November to approve $39.5 million in 20-year general obligation bonds for a major renovation and expansion, including approximately 21,000 square feet of additional space and a relocated main entrance.

The district has not sought new funding of this magnitude in more than three decades, which is an important consideration. But voters should also consider whether this is the right time for such a long-term financial commitment.

Earlier this year, the Vernon Area Public Library District and Indian Trails Library District entered an agreement providing residents of both districts full access to each library. Indian Trails is also exploring a satellite location in Buffalo Grove. Residents therefore have expanded access to library services and potentially another convenient location.

At the same time, homeowners are facing higher costs for groceries, utilities, insurance and other necessities, while property taxes continue to rise from multiple taxing bodies. For example, Aptakisic-Tripp School District 102’s 2023 $49 million increase was estimated to add about $634 annually to the taxes on a $500,000 home. The proposed library referendum would add approximately another $150 per year.

I support our library and the services it provides. The question is whether this $39.5 million, 20-year commitment is necessary now, particularly given expanded access to other library services and the financial pressures facing homeowners from tariffs, high gas and grocery prices, and rising insurance costs.

That is a question worth carefully considering before voting.
