Lombard apartment fire leaves one resident dead

Authorities continue to investigate a fire that left one resident dead and another displaced Friday night at a Lombard apartment building, village officials said.

Lombard police are conducting a death investigation along with DuPage County’s Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigation Team Forensic Investigations Unit, authorities said.

According to the village, firefighters responded at 9:52 p.m. Friday to reports of a fire inside an apartment on St. Regis Drive. They arrived about three minutes later and attacked the blaze with a portable fire extinguisher while search crews located the resident, officials said.

The resident was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove and later pronounced dead, according to the village. Authorities did not identify the person.

Additional crews used a hose line to put down the remaining fire and evacuated and searched other apartments. The fire was completely extinguished at about 10:20 p.m. and did not spread to other units, officials said.

Several fire departments assisted, and Lombard police helped with traffic and crowd control.
