Elgin’s Bethlehem Lutheran to host community pet blessing and shelter drive Oct. 3

Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Child Development Center will host their annual Community Pet Blessing & Supply Drive on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The free event will take place on the church’s front lawn, 340 Grand Blvd. just west of Lords Park in Elgin.

All local residents, families, and pet owners throughout the Elgin area are invited to bring their animals to receive an individual blessing from the church’s clergy. Recognizing that pets are cherished members of the family, short blessing prayers will repeat every 20 minutes throughout the morning format.

To ensure a safe and welcoming experience for everyone, the event features several unique adaptations:

• Alternative blessings: Children are highly encouraged to bring their favorite plush stuffed animals for a blessing. Owners of anxious, reactive, or homebound animals are also invited to bring a photo of their pet on a smartphone to receive a blessing by proxy.

• Hospitality & Comfort Stations: Free pre-packaged pet treats and multiple weighted fresh-water stations will be accessible for all attending animals.

• Autumn Photo Booth: A seasonal photo backdrop featuring pumpkins and hay bales will be set up for families to capture a free commemorative picture with their companions.

In tandem with the celebration, Bethlehem Lutheran is partnering with Anderson Humane to host a critical item donation drive. Drop off much-needed shelter supplies at the collection station. Anderson Humane’s most urgent current needs include:

• Canned dog, puppy, cat, and kitten food (pâté style preferred)

• Clean, gently used towels and blankets (without internal filling)

• Clay or scoopable cat litter

All visiting pets must be kept on a secure, physical leash or held within an appropriate travel carrier or crate at all times. In the event of inclement autumn weather, the festivities will seamlessly transition inside to the church’s lower-level fellowship hall.
