‘Let Peace Be Among Us’: Friends worldwide gather for World Quaker Day

On World Quaker Day, the community is invited to join Friends across borders and time zones in a shared focus on peace. This year’s theme is “Let Peace Be Among Us” with the supporting Bible passage, Hebrews 12:14, “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy.”

The Friends World Committee for Consultation is planning an extended global online worship on Sunday, Oct. 4, bringing together Friends across borders, languages and Quaker traditions.

The worship will last for many hours, reaching across time zones from the Americas to New Zealand. Each hour of worship will be dedicated to a part of the world where prayers for peace are particularly needed. You’re welcome to join for as little or as long as you’d like.

Locally, the Downers Grove Friends will have expanded meeting for worship from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the meeting house, 5710 Lomond Ave. Visit dgquakers.org.

Friends in Asia West Pacific will be introducing the theme and holding an hour-long webinar at 2 a.m. (CDT).

At 6 a.m. (CDT), there will be an extended period of worship, lasting six hours. Each hour will be hosted by different person/people who will be giving ministry and there will be time for waiting worship.

Finally, Friends in New Zealand will end the day at 5 p.m. (CDT) with a final hour reflection on peace and justice.
