Is the Chicago White Sox’s postseason chance a miracle? No comment, says Pope Leo.

With the White Sox officially in Major League Baseball’s postseason, some joke that the Chicago team may have had a little bit of holy help. Pope Leo, a Chicago native, refused to say.

Aboard the Papal Plane Friday, Pope Leo dodged a reporter’s question about whether it was a “miracle” or if he had any role in the White Sox, his known baseball team allegiance, advancing to the playoffs. Smiling, the Pope replied, “No comment.”

The White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-1 on Thursday, bringing the team one step closer to the possibility of a World Series run after losing 100-plus games in each of the previous three seasons. The White Sox join the Cubs in the playoffs, who also won Thursday to clinch their respective postseason slot.

“Great things happen in Chicago,” Pope Leo said.

Video of the interaction, and the Pope’s nonanswer, took off on social media. Footage of the interview racked up thousands of views across national media outlets’ social media platforms.

The Pope, the first Holy Father to hail from the United States, is a well-known White Sox fan.

The South Side team even had a theme night in August dedicated to the Pope, where fans at Rate Field were given replica papal-style hats featuring the Sox logo in a game against the Cincinnati Reds.
