‘Princess Bride’ pre-Broadway premiere, ‘Heathers the Musical’ among Broadway in Chicago’s 2027 shows

The pre-Broadway premiere of “The Princess Bride,” a new musical adapted from Rob Reiner’s beloved 1987 film starring Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin and Robin Wright, promises to be a hot ticket during the upcoming Broadway in Chicago season announced Monday.

The new tuner by writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice, with music by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez follows the efforts of Wesley, a farm-boy turned pirate, to rescue his beloved Buttercup from an evil prince. The show runs July 19 through Aug. 27, 2027, at the James M. Nederlander Theatre.

The season — which mostly includes musicals adapted from films — commences Feb. 16, 2027, with the return of the 30th anniversary revival of “The Who’s Tommy,” which premiered at the Goodman Theatre in 2023.

That’s followed by the return of “The Bodyguard” (April 6-18, 2027) based on the 1992 film starring Whitney Houston as a pop diva threatened by a stalker and Kevin Costner as the man hired to protect her.

Next up is the first national tour of “Heathers the Musical” (June 8-20, 2027), a high school-set tuner about popularity being a life-and-death issue.

Summer brings the first national tour of “Just in Time” (Aug. 10-22, 2027), the hit Broadway show chronicling the life of teen idol Bobby Darin.

The season concludes with “The Buena Vista Social Club” (Aug. 31-Sept. 12, 2027). Inspired by Wim Wenders’ 1999 documentary, the musical tells the story of Omara Portuondo, known as Cuba’s “queen of feeling,” and the efforts of an ambitious young producer to revive her career.
