County Board should review concerns about treasurer

We ask the members of the Kane County Board to do their job and exercise the power granted to them by the state. The state’s attorney is limited by a conflict of interest, but Illinois law gives the Kane County Board the authority to act when there are allegations involving the county treasurer. Under 55 ILCS 5/3-10019, the board can examine the treasurer under oath regarding the faithful discharge of his duties. Under 55 ILCS 5/3-10020, the board can take action, including removal for specific misconduct, including the failure to answer questions.

At the Sept. 8 board meeting, State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser clarified that she cannot put the issue of the treasurer’s alleged misuse of a mailing on the board agenda — but a county board member can. If the board agrees to support an investigation, Mosser can appoint a special prosecutor to provide independent legal advice because of her conflict. We ask county board members to put this matter on a committee agenda and get the process started.

Constituents deserve answers to the concerns they have repeatedly raised. This action isn't about prejudging the outcome. It's about transparency, due process and accountability — and allowing the board to exercise the authority Illinois law gives it. That’s overdue.
