Elgin firefighters rescue man who jumped into Fox River

Elgin firefighters rescued a man who jumped into the Fox River Saturday afternoon.

Members of the city’s fire department called to the river just south of the Chicago Street bridge at about 3:25 p.m. arrived within three minutes of the call and found a man wading in the river, officials said.

Firefighters made contact with the man and tried to talk him into safely walking to shore, but at 3:31 p.m. they saw him go under the water without supporting himself, authorities said. Firefighters entered the river and secured that within a minute of him going below the surface.

Other members of the department arrived in a boat, pulled the man from the water and brought him to shore, officials said.

Paramedics transported the man to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for evaluation and reported no major injuries. No members of the Elgin Fire Department were injured in the rescue.

The department received assistance from South Elgin and the Countryside Fire Protection District.
