Cyclist towing kid issued citation after narrow escape in Batavia crash

Batavia police issued a citation Friday to a cyclist after he and a child had a narrow escape following a rush-hour crash with a pickup truck.

Neither the cyclist nor the child, who he was towing in a kids trailer, were seriously injured after being hit by the truck at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The incident occurred as a man in a Ford pickup truck was turning left from southbound South Water Street onto eastbound First Street, Batavia police said in a Friday update.

Police said the Ford driver halted at the stop sign and was making his turn, however, the cyclist, who was heading north on South Water Street, slowed at First Street but did not stop and continued into the intersection.

At the same time, a second, westbound vehicle was turning left onto southbound South Water Street from First Street.

As the cyclist entered the intersection, they were obscured by the second vehicle and the Ford driver didn’t see them, authorities explained.

The truck struck the bicycle, lodging it and the trailer with the child under the front bumper. The child was treated at the scene by paramedics and the two were taken to a medical facility.

The cyclist was issued a citation for failure to yield at an intersection.

Both “are recovering well from minor injuries,” officials said, noting that “traffic laws apply equally to motorists, bicyclists, and all other vehicle operators.”
