Clearbrook wants to build group home on vacant land in Lake Barrington

A group home for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities has been proposed for a vacant residential lot in Lake Barrington.

Clearbrook, an Arlington Heights-based nonprofit group that offers a variety of services to people with disabilities, wants to construct a one-story facility at 24334 N. Grandview Drive, in the Grandview Estates neighborhood. The 2,726-square-foot structure would look like a traditional single-family house, documents indicate.

The proposed facility would have four bedrooms for up to four residents, Village Administrator Sharon L. Peterson said. Staff would be available around the clock.

The one-acre lot is zoned for single-family residential use. Clearbrook has requested a zoning variation to fit its needs.

Sixty such group homes operate in northeastern Illinois, Peterson said in a recent letter to Lake Barrington residents about the project. The need for facilities like this and the daily living services they offer is growing, she said.

Lake Barrington’s plan commission had scheduled a public hearing on Clearbrook’s proposal Sept. 10, but the session was canceled because not enough commissioners were able to attend. The hearing now is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at village hall, 23860 N. Old Barrington Road.

The proposal for the house — formally called a community integrated living arrangement — first surfaced at village hall this summer, Peterson said.

Village officials have received a few inquiries from residents about the project, Peterson said, but nothing she characterized as opposition.
