Investigation continues after Des Plaines man fatally shot by police

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Thursday morning on a Des Plaines man who was fatally shot Wednesday by police.

Ayham Babidi, 21, died following a confrontation at a house on the 2000 block of East Touhy Avenue. Officers had gone there about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in response to a domestic disturbance, according to a Des Plaines Police Department news release. Details of the shooting haven’t been disclosed.

Des Plaines paramedics provided medical aid and took Babidi to a hospital, but he couldn’t be saved, police said.

Touhy Avenue was shut down between Des Plaines River Road and Scott Street after the shooting. Yellow tape stretched across parts of the road to prevent access to the area.

The suburban Major Case Assistance Team is investigating the shooting. The Cook County medical examiner’s office also is investigating Babidi’s death and will handle the autopsy.
