Northern Illinois Food Bank kicks off Hunger Action Month with call for volunteers

This September, Northern Illinois Food Bank will join the Feeding America network and communities across the country in recognizing Hunger Action Month, an annual campaign that raises awareness about hunger and inspires people to take action to fight hunger.

Northern Illinois Food Bank’s 13-county service area throughout suburban and rural Northern Illinois continues to experience historic demand for food assistance, serving an average of 570,000 neighbors each month, surpassing peak COVID-era demand.

To help meet the need, the Food Bank’s network of more than 900 food pantries and feeding programs distributed 98 million meals in fiscal year 2026, underscoring the importance of continued community support.

Northern Illinois Food Bank encourages individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to find a way to take action in the fight against hunger this September.

“Whether you volunteer your time at the Food Bank or local food pantry, donate, advocate for policies that address hunger or help raise awareness, every action makes a difference. Together, we can ensure our neighbors have the food they need to thrive,” said Julie Yurko, president and CEO of Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Here are five ways to take action during Hunger Action Month

1. Volunteer

Participate in volunteer shifts throughout September at one of the Food Bank’s four centers (Geneva, Lake Forest, Joliet, and Rockford) or at a food distribution.

2. Support a Hunger Action Month Cause Promotions

Throughout September, local and national partners are helping raise awareness and funds for neighbors in need. At Woody’s Apple Orchard in Plano, $1 from each dozen of doughnuts sold will be donated to Northern Illinois Food Bank.

3. Donate

Make a donation or start a fundraising page to help provide nutritious food and resources to neighbors. Every $1 helps provide $7 worth of groceries.

4. Advocate

Learn how you can support public policy changes that help address hunger and make an impact in your community.

5. Go Orange on National Hunger Action Day

Wear orange, the national color of hunger awareness, and encourage your community to join the movement on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
