Football roundup: Antioch, Mundelein, Wauconda and Grayslake North improve to 3-0
Antioch, Mundelein, Wauconda and Grayslake North all posted victories to remain unbeaten in Week 3.
Antioch 35, Grant 28: Logan Lennon’s two-yard touchdown run with :24 left to play was the difference as Antioch (3-0, 1-0) prevailed. Gavin Stone rushed for 204 yards and four touchdowns while Lennon finished with 73 yards. Doltyn Lontin piled up 208 yards on 33 carries and two touchdowns for Grant (1-2, 0-1). Connor Evans also had a touchdown run for the Bulldogs and threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Fudela.
Wauconda 20, Lakes 7: Wauconda continued its strong start with a home victory. Brody Rudolph had a solid all-around game with 17 carries for 103 yards, two catches for 47 yards and three tackles. Brody McKenna rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown. Brian Hart had a 20-yard touchdown run and was solid on defense with six tackles. Luke Sickmeir had two catches for 49 yards and touchdown along with an interception. Cashton Silton had 10 tackles while Brody Drozd had six tackles. Julies Perez hauled in a 48-yard touchdown reception for Lakes (1-2, 0-1).
Grayslake North 41, North Chicago 13: Grayslake North (3-0, 1-0) opened Northern Lake County Conference play with a convincing win. Jaylen Newkirk threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a 31-yard touchdown run. Luc Woyat had seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Brooklyn Washington caught a touchdown pass. Alejandro Romero caught a touchdown pass and booted a pair of field goals. Jau Kelly also scored on a three-yard run.
Mundelein 44, Waukegan 6: Mundelein (3-0) rolled to become playoff eligible. The Mustangs haven’t been in the playoffs since 2004 and have qualified three times in school history.
Grayslake Central 57, Round Lake 21: Ken-Ye Pendleton rushed for four touchdowns as Grayslake Central knocked Round Lake (2-1, 0-1) from the list of unbeaten. Pendelton had touchdown runs on 26, 63, 58 and 38 yards for the Rams (2-1, 1-0).
Maine South 41, Maine West 7: Maine South (2-1) geared up for its Thursday night showdown with New Trier by rolling past the Warriors. Jameson Purcell tossed three touchdown passes while just playing one quarter. Elliot Arteta caught a 28-yarder, a 22-yarder to Keaton Vitel and a 62-yarder to Nick McCarthy. Austin Breaux came in later to throw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Arteta. Matthew Schlenhardt had a four-yard touchdown run for the Hawks.
New Trier 61, Vernon Hills 0: The Trevians (3-0) pitched their second shutout of the season as Vernon Hills fell to 0-3.
Hoffman Estates 33, Rolling Meadows 19: Riley Lennert had a huge night for Hoffman (1-2) to help lead the Hawks to their first win. The junior was a beast on both sides of the ball with 21 carries for 256 yards and two touchdowns on runs of 69 and 60. He also had 14 tackles. Shion Dailey threw a pair of touchdown passes for Hoffman: a 14-yarder to Kenly Joseph and a 13-yarder to TJ Bond. Jayden Setto added a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Hawks, who forced four turnovers. Luke Harvey and Gavin Prickett each had touchdown runs for Rolling Meadows (1-2). Prickett also had a touchdown pass to Dominic Polenzani. “Hats off to the Hoffman players and staff for taking advantage of our mistakes,” Meadows coach Devonte Amos said. “We’ll learn from it, get back to work, and look to bounce back in week four.”
Waubonsie Valley 28, Palatine 21: Palatine (1-2) dropped its second in a row. Brandon Martini threw for 145 yards for the Pirates. He tossed touchdown passes to Brennan Wright and Jayden Evans. Jhonathan Hernandez had a 17-yard interception return for a touchdown for Palatine.
Carmel 21, St. Laurence 14: Carmel (2-1) made the Vikings’ second trip to the Northern suburbs as bad as the last one as the Corsairs took advantage of St. Laurence’s sloppy special teams play. Carmel’s Jaquel Edmonds took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a TD. That was followed by a blocked punt by Jameer Miles and a blocked FG by Kristian Chadick. Jorden Moore finished with a pair of rushing touchdowns and 85 all-purpose yards. The Carmel defense had some heroes as well. Anthony Ingoglia had a pair of sacks on the final two plays to force the Vikings to turn the ball over on downs. Earlier on that same series, Jameer Miles had a game-saving tackle after a busted coverage. Miles finished with 10 tackles.
Notre Dame 21, St. Viator 0: The game was halted at halftime due to lightening. Senior linebacker Tony McElroy led the St. Viator (0-3) defense with 7 tackles, while sophomore receiver Dylam Molina had 3 receptions for 37 yards. Junior quarterback Danny Traver was 8 of 13 passing for 71 yards. “We played hard and executed fairly well tonight," said St. Viator coach Robbie Gould. "We were ready to play and opened up with an 11-play drive to start the game. Now we just have to learn to be more disciplined. Penalties really hurt us tonight."
Willowbrook 26, Leyden 9: Leyden (1-2) had some big plays defensively from Matt Orlowski, who had a sack and a forced fumble. But it was not enough as the Eagles lost to Willowbrook for the 11th season in a row.
Rochelle 40, Wheeling 0: Wheeling (0-3) had some difficulties in getting its offense going in a game stopped at halftime because of the weather. Anthony Alvarado threw for 33 yards and rushed for 21 more. Evan Watanuki had six carries for 28 yards while Alexander Mitroi had four catches for 26 yards.
Libertyville 21, Warren 6: In a game suspended Friday night and completed Saturday, Libertyville (1-2, 1-0) picked up its first win. Kaden Butt caught a 78-yard touchdown pass on a wheel route from Jackson Yarc. Butt would then race 80-yards up the middle for a touchdown. Butt also had a 45-yard interception return.
