Second Fox River Trail detour needed for wastewater construction project in Geneva

A second section of the Fox River Trail will be closed for two months starting the week of Sept. 14 due to the construction of a new sanitary sewer river crossing.

The new closure affects the west side of the Fox River as trail users travel near the Kane County Government Center on Route 31, south of the Union Pacific-West Railway. An online map detailing the closure and detour route is available on the city’s website.

Northbound cyclists and pedestrians will detour onto South Third Street, then head east on South Street to reconnect with the Fox River Trail near the pedestrian bridge beneath the train tracks. Trail users crossing the bridge from east of the Fox River will follow the same detour route in reverse.

The west side detour, which was the same route implemented during Union Pacific’s Third Main Line project, is expected to be in place for about two months, weather permitting.

The sanitary river crossing required a detour on the east side of the Fox River beginning in August. The east side section of the trail is expected to reopen in late September, weather permitting. A map and details are posted on the Wastewater Systems Improvements project web page.

The infrastructure enhancement involves replacing the existing 20-inch sanitary sewer river crossing with two new 20-inch sanitary sewers. The upgrade is designed to reduce the risk of sanitary overflows. The crossing carries all sanitary flow from the west side of Geneva to the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
