Kane County records its first two cases of West Nile virus in 2026

The Kane County Health Department has reported the first two human cases of West Nile virus in Kane County for the 2026 mosquito season.

Both individuals are Aurora residents, and both developed the more serious, neuroinvasive form of the virus requiring hospitalization. There were five human cases of West Nile in 2025 and four in 2024. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for the virus in people, and preventing mosquito bites is the most effective way to reduce the risk of infection.

The county health department recommends using an EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, eliminating standing water, and keeping grass and weeds trimmed in your yards, among other measures.
