Human infections of West Nile reported in DuPage, Lake counties

The first human cases of West Nile virus in DuPage and Lake counties were reported by health authorities Wednesday.

In Lake County, the case involved a person in their 40s who became ill in early August. In DuPage, the case involves an adult, according to health department officials.

The virus is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected do not feel sick, but about one in five may develop symptoms, usually three to 15 days later.

Symptoms including fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. In rare cases, the virus can result in encephalitis or meningitis.
